If there’s one thing we know how to do in Milwaukee, it’s party…outside…with music…and beer. Lots of beer. This week is no exception in Dairy Land. From chicks who rock at Summerfest to surfing tunes at tiki parties, there are plenty of enticing options to get your toes tapping while wetting your whistle in Cream City. Check out the upcoming events, and then make plans to celebrate the sounds of summer this week!
Dear Ruthie,
I love your column. I want to be a writer like you, but I wonder if 52 is too old to start? I also want to know your tips on how I might improve my writing.
Thanks,
Wonder Writer Woman
Dear Woman,
It sounds cliché, but it’s never too late to start…anything. You want to be a writer? Go for it, honey! I’d say take a class if you can, start journaling and try to write every day. I would also suggest reading (a lot) to help you find your writing voice. Join a book club, which will give you some insight into how others perceive the written word. Then sit your keester down and crank out the next Fifty Shades of Grey or my biography…same difference.
UPCOMING EVENTS:

Open for 11 days, featuring 11 free stages and offering up more than 1,000 performances, Summerfest remains the greatest music fest in the country. Lots of food and beer don’t hurt, and the people watching is out of this world! Don’t miss it! (Or are you “more of a State Fair person?”)

Your at-the-door donation allows you access to the 6 p.m. extravaganza. Live entertainment, incredible appetizers, a cash bar and a silent auction round out the upscale happy hour.
June 25: Opening Night of ‘Avenue Q’ at Middleton Performing Arts Center (2100 Bristol St., Middleton): Featuring sexually confused characters, bawdy hookers and porn addicts—did I mention they’re all puppets?—this hilarious show goes down in history as one of the most adult musicals of all time; not to mention that it’s a favorite of the LGBT community. Don’t miss this Tony-winner as it takes to Middleton with performances through July 5. See middletonplayers.com for tickets.
June 26: Bow Wow Beach Party at Boscos Social Club (260 W. Main St., Waukesha): Love your doggie? Who doesn’t? The folks at Seniors Rock animal rescue crank up summer’s thermostat with an after-work tiki tryst. Featuring umbrella drinks, live music, raffles and more, the outdoor event kicks off at 6 p.m. Sorry, but you’ll have to leave your pooch at home for this “paw-fect” summer soirée.
June 27: Rock the Park at Hart Park (7300 W. Chestnut St.): Billed as a celebration of love, light and life, this free 4-10 p.m. fun fest includes food, beverages, a kids area and loads of music—three bands to be exact. Hosted by Horizon Home Care & Hospice, the evening includes a candlelight vigil to remember those who passed before us. See hhch.net to learn how to contribute your loved one’s photos to the evening’s memorial.
June 27: ‘Trashier Than Ever’ Show at Captain DIX (4124 River Road, Wisconsin Dells): The girls of Captain DIX are serving up another heaping helping of craziness with this comedy drag show. The 10:30 p.m. change-of-pace performance promises to tickle your funny bone with some of the state’s favorite crazy ladies. (I guess my invite got lost in the mail.) Make it a weekend to remember with a cabin at the resort! Simply call 608-253-1818 for a room.
June 28: Movie Night at Milwaukee LGBT Community Center (1110 N. Market St.): Enjoy a free movie and popcorn with the gang at the Community Center. The movie is always all-ages appropriate and fun is sure to be had. Get off the couch, meet some new people and have some fun at this 4 p.m. showing.
