Once the hub of Milwaukee counterculture, Brady Street has gentrified over the years, becoming in the process a commercial powerhouse and one of the East Side’s most revered destinations. Similarly, the annual Brady Street Festival has calmed down somewhat, becoming a popular, well-attended family festival, complete with a “Cheesefest.” This year’s festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., still offers plenty of music to groove to, though, including sets from Frogwater, Lil’ Rev and The Wildbirds, the Appleton boogie-rock band that closes the night with what’s billed as their final performance.

I grew up in Milwaukee and John Gurda was my Journey House mentor. Milwaukee County government started going down the tubes with the election of Dave Schultz. He began to dismantle the good works of his predecessors. Mr.Schutlz introduced his Chicago brand of government by using taxpayer money to seduce county unions and its workers. The excessive compensation flys in the face of "public service". Taxes were being redirected from the overall good of the community to the impowerment of a certain political party. There is no irony with Scott Walker. He truly is a throwback to the frugality once embraced by Milwaukee. The real irony is that John Gurda, a true historian and local treasure, can't see the party he probably always endorses has taken this once modest and moral community and made it into just another example of poor schools,poor inter-city and poor decision making.

I think you're taking his comments out of context. He's not a socialist, he's just outlining the role socialism played in shaping the city.

On one hand you state tha...

You contradict yourself.
On one hand you state that the successors of the Socialists began to dismantle their legacy. True enough. think Grover Norquist.
On the other hand Walker has talked the talk but not walked the walk. He has plunged the County into debt and broken many of its institutions.
Frugality was only one aspect of the Socialists platform. Honesty and good stewardship of public institutions was another. sic: Walker's mismanagement of the mental health facility and others.

Love it- the seeds of socialism were sowed in Milwaukee by a group of Germans who had fled a "failed revolt". Definition of progressive- continuing to support the same failed policies, despite historical evidence that the policies will ALWAYS fail. Gurda is a pretty cool guy, though. Definitely a Milwaukee treasure, and this interview was great.
