The Big Gig may be over, but there are plenty of incredible festivals yet to come this summer in Milwaukee. One such jubilee is German Fest, a family friendly, fun-filled celebration of all things German that takes place Friday, July 24 (3 p.m.-12 a.m.), Saturday, July 25 (12 p.m.-12 a.m.) and Sunday, July 26 (12 p.m.-8 p.m.) at Henry Maier Festival Park.
For 35 years, Southeast Wisconsin’s German Fest has been recognized as the largest authentic German ethnic festival outside of Germany. Many attend for the beloved Dachshund Derby, the crowd-favorite Glockenspiel and the extensive variety of authentic German food, including spanferkel, bienenstich and potato pancakes. But hang on to your lederhosen and dirndls, because this year’s 35th anniversary celebration is offering attendees some exciting special features that will definitely have you dancing with gemütlichkeit.
For starters, opening day is “Fan Appreciation Day” and all attendees will be treated to $3 admission. In addition, the Opening Ceremony at 5:15 p.m. on Friday, July 24, will feature 52 crew members of the USS Milwaukee (LCS5), one of the very few Navy ships ever built that will be commissioned in her namesake city and the fifth in our nation’s history to be named in honor of Milwaukee.

Fest goers will also have the unique opportunity to meet Veronika Hummel and have their Hummel figurine personally autographed. This is the first-ever live appearance in North America by the Hummel family, creators of the popular porcelain figurines based on the drawings of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel. And last but not least, on Saturday, July 25 from 6:30-9 p.m., the seventh annual Milwaukee Air & Water Show will feature an exclusive Twilight Air Show encore performance for German Fest attendees.
Other 2015 highlights include the unveiling of Wein-Bauer’s limited 35 Year German Fest Anniversary Wine (available only on the festival grounds), spectacular fireworks both Friday and Saturday nights, bands from Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota on multiple stages and much, much more. Prost!
