German composer Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G. Minor (1866) has been a staple of the classical repertoire since its inception. An allegro moderato prelude leads directly into the work’s very heart: its warm-hearted, melodious adagio. A gripping allegro energico finale concludes the piece in exuberant fashion. Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Frank Almond provides the violin solo. Carl Orff’s scenic cantata Carmina Burana (1936) is actually the first part of a great trilogy but its popularity is so overwhelming it may as well have been his only composition. With its fabulous blend of decidedly modern and medieval music, infectious rhythms and racy lyrics, it’s a surefire crowd pleaser. Andreas Delfs leads the MSO, MSO Chorus, Milwaukee Children’s Choir and vocal soloists in performances of both works.
