Madison musician/producer Chants’ name might not ring a bell, but to most followers of the Milwaukee hip-hop scene his sound will be familiar. He produced WebsterX’s breakout single “Doomsday,” and now he’s back with another track with a different Milwaukee artist who seems overdue for a profile spike: singer/rapper/dancer Zed Kenzo. Their new track “Elixer” conjures a similar sense of bleary, cosmic wonder as “Doomsday,” but the pacing couldn’t be more different—it’s fast, anxious and unnerving, all tribal drum hits and vaporized steel-drum tones. Remember those Mario desert levels with all the pyramids and quick sand and spiky cactus monsters, where everything is dangerous and disorienting? This is basically their take on the same feeling.
