The Off The Wall Theatre continues its season with a stage adaptation of the Agatha Christie throwback Death on the Nile. Karl Miller stars as Christie’s Belgian super-detective Hercule Poirot, who takes a cruise down the Nile River. As such things usually go for Poirot, someone is killed on the cruise and he must discover who the murderer is before the boat can return to shore. Tonight’s performance is at 8 p.m.

I love that the bands the guy listed as great CD's this year all got played on commercial radio in Milwaukee on LUM.

I guess he likes "fecal matter".

Awesome post!
Like yourself, I am a music fan, and my tastes gravitate towards "alternative" rock and electronica.
What I usually do is peruse websites like allmusic.com, rollingstone.com, spin.com, filter.com and others to find music that would interest me. If it sounds like something that suits my style, I go out and get it.
What I DON'T do is listen to the radio. Everytime i turn on a Milwaukee station I get an earful of Nickelback. Give me a break.
I am compiling a Best Of list as well, and the result is not so bleak. There were some amazing CDs that were released this year, both from vets (Foo Fighters' ECHOS...; NIN's THE SLIP) and newbies (Vampire Weekend, Black Kids, Ting Tings).
I guess you have to look-and listen-beyond the fecal matter that passes off as Milwaukee radio today. It's out there, I gurantee it!

Not sure I agree 100%.....most of the CD's you listed came out in 2007, and shouldn't be considered for your list anyway.

The most played songs from 2008 releases so far on the year on LUM are:

Coldplay "Violet Hill"
Vampire Weekend "A-Punk"
Weezer "Pork & Beans"
Flobots "Handlebars" -- I hated the song, but the listener reaction to it was unprecedented
Death Cab "I Will Possess Your Heart"

That's an okay list.

And the glimmers that you recall so fondly are still getting played on a regular basis. Float on is #54 most played this year. 54 out of 1765 songs. Steady as she goes so far is 153, and slightly low due to the newer Raconteurs album. Lazy Eye #22 most played this year.

I think basing this off of Billboard charts was destined to bring everyone down from the start. The #1 singles either catch on like wildfire or are already household names in the format. But if you look at some of the bands that never made #1, I think you'll see that it's not THAT bad a year for modern rock.

Vampire Weekend -- the 4th most played song on the station -- is going to make my top 10 list. Top 3, most likely.

The station has the best ratings in it's life right now. Don't stick a fork in the format yet!!!!
