"Same Time"
Renz Young – “Mannequin” (Produced by Derelle Rideout)
Renz Young is fairly new to the Milwaukee rap scene, but already he lays claim to one of the city’s great voices: It’s gruff yet light, with just a whisper of raspiness. His latest track, “Mannequin,” released in advance of an upcoming EP 2975, is a dazzlingly catchy pop single helmed by Derelle Rideout, the Milwaukee producer behind some of the most soulful local hip-hop tracks of the last couple years. This one is begging for radio play.
Kewii – “Get Down” (Produced by Mike Regal)
Earlier this week we posted a great new track from Mike Regal, a Miltown Beat Down champion who is giving rapping a push. He’s got what it takes to be a solo artist, but here’s hoping he doesn’t stop producing on the side, because the tracks he’s been lending local artists lately have been phenomenal. The latest is “Get Down,” from the buoyant Milwaukee rapper Kewii. There’s a looseness and elasticity to her voice the recalls early ’90s hip-hop, but the digital edges in Regal’s beat keep the track grounded firmly in the present. I can’t wait to hear more from both artists.
El-Shareef – “DIBS” (Produced by Slom)
Milwaukee rapper El-Shareef is a bit of a chameleon; he can wear any number of styles well. For his latest look, he rhymes over some hazily jazzy West Coast sounds from producer Slom. It clocks in at under three minutes, but it’ll leave you with a contact high.
Pharaoh Mac & DMT – “Same Time”
One of the city’s most polished hip-hop acts, the producer/rapper duo Pharaoh Mac & DMT can’t help but recall another pop-minded rap tandem, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, in their knack for catchy sounds and candied hooks. Their latest single, featuring an orchestral assist from the string duo SistaStrings, is their best yet, a sweetly romantic earworm. It’ll appear on their upcoming album SYMBOLS; you can stream the video below.
