When it comes to stand-up comedy, there is a particular intangible "it" factor that some comics have and others simply don't. You can sense it in the nuances of a comic's act and their ability to transform the world around them into their own specific anecdotal purview.
It's similar to how you can tell if a burgeoning local band is going to make it in the industry just a couple of songs into their set: encountering the performance is a memorable experience, not just simple entertainment. The material resonates with you and you absorb it, knowing that some day soon the secret will be out and diminish the sense of personal satisfaction associated with discovering something great and unknown.
Next week Saturday, you'll have a chance to make one of those discoveries when up-and-coming stand-up comedian Nick Vatterott makes a stop at Milwaukee's Underground Collaborative. The performance will present an opportunity to see a comedian on the rise in an intimate venue.
Vatterott definitely sees the world through his own tiny key-hole. He possesses a well developed and distinctively unorthodox style. Vatterott's been making the rounds in the stand-up circuit for years, appearing at the Just For Laughs Festival, the New York Comedy Festival, Comedy Central's "The Half Hour," performing on podcasts (including hosting his own show, which is a surreal trip), making appearances on Conan and The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon. Last year he released the well-received LP For Amusement Only on Comedy Central Records.
