It's a log, it's a portable fire, it's: TimberTote!
I like to share the love for a local business when I can. Here is one that you may not have heard of yet – but that you could certainly appreciate on one of your nature outings. This ingenious little device hails from central Wisconsin and began selling close to home at the Outpost Natural Foods Coop stores in the summer of 2014. It is more reasonably priced than some bundles of firewood and offers a solid two hours minimum of burning enjoyment. Light and easy to carry, this little guy comes with a rope handle fashioned on the side. Since it is made locally, you don't have to worry about bothering any other trees. TimberTote is comprised of a Pine species indigenous to our area. Best of all, this self-proclaimed, "simple clean campfire," won't leave a big mess and is eco-friendly. TimberTotes are 12-inches tall with a 9-10-inch diameter.
It is crafted by TimberTote LLC in Mosinee, Wisconsin. Scott Firkus, a sales rep for the company, explained how it was created to "spark the interest of the market." Firkus was excited to report that the demand is so strong, they will be going nationwide with the product, coast-to-coast. Meanwhile here in Wisconsin, some state parks such as the Pike Lake Unit at Kettle Moraine State Forest, also offer the TimberTote for sale in the ranger's office.
Baked in a kiln to get nice and dry and hollowed out on the inside, TimberTote comes with a natural starter stick. Prop it up vertically in a fire safe pit or grill with the racks taken out. Light the starter and let her go. It took my companion and I a mere five minutes to start to enjoy the warmth of the fire and the sight of dancing blue flames. As the fire burned, the flames spread from the inside of the log and out through a star shaped hole in the top. Eventually, ours took on the look of a smiling Halloween jack-o-lantern. The fire burned through and the wood collapsed in on itself quite awhile later. It smelled wonderful and it lasted us for a good three hours. Take a chance on this wonderful, natural way to enjoy a campfire without having to leave the city. You can also find TimberTotes in Rural King and various home and garden stores.
