Conquest & Cover-up is about the inherent conflict in establishing one’s own beliefs “for the greater good” yet simultaneously keeping much of the operation secret, censoring certain less-desirable information, and silencing outspoken critics.
On one hand, the invading hoard claims they have a monopoly on righteousness and that their regime will fix whatever happens to ail the invaded. On the other, they realize the brutality of the reality of conquest and cover-up the less desirable, less supportable aspects of their reign. Rather than address shortcomings, admit faults and work to improve the reality of the results, they hope to blind the oppressed with soaring rhetoric while continuing their unrelenting push for power.
While the piece was originally inspired by the many conflicts and conquests going on around the world, this past week’s events in Baltimore and around the country enliven the piece once more. Contrary to the idea of an outside force invading, in this instance we see those that already hold power removing freedoms to restore their version of civility.
Despite assertions that they work for the best interests of all, they hide behind podiums and police lines, refusing to praise or condemn any aspect of the ongoing issue. Instead of working on meaningful policy reform they “understand the concerns” of the oppressed and “promise” a better outcome next time. Instead of engaging with communities, they engage with committees.
There are no real winners when communities are torn apart, no matter the reason…but if the conquest and the people behind it are really fighting for the greater good, you’d think they would have a lot less to hide.
